What to expect
A clear path to getting started.
Initial psychiatric evaluation
A comprehensive intake β medical and mental health history, current symptoms, prior medications, goals β so your psychiatrist can recommend a treatment plan tailored to you.
Treatment plan & prescription (if appropriate)
If medication is part of the plan, your psychiatrist will discuss options, expected effects, and any tradeoffs. Medication is one tool among several β therapy, lifestyle, and groups all stay on the table.
Ongoing medication management
Follow-up visits to monitor how the medication is working, adjust as needed, and stay coordinated with your therapist. Most clients meet every 1β3 months once stable.
Coordinated with your therapy
Your psychiatrist and therapist share the same chart and treatment goals. That's the difference an integrated practice makes β no playing telephone between providers.

Common questions
Frequently asked
Do I need to be in therapy at MMHC to see a psychiatrist here?
No β you can see one of our psychiatrists for medication support whether or not you're working with a therapist at MMHC. That said, many clients find the coordination valuable: when both providers are at the same practice, your therapist and prescriber can share notes and work toward the same goals.
What's the difference between a psychiatrist and a therapist?
Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MDs) or nurse practitioners (NPs/PMHNPs) who can prescribe medication and treat the biology of mental health. Therapists provide talk therapy and don't prescribe. Many people benefit from both β therapy to develop coping skills and process experiences, medication when biological symptoms need addressing.
How long does it take to find the right medication?
It varies. Some people respond well to the first medication tried; others need adjustments over a few months to find the right fit and dose. Most psychiatric medications take 4β8 weeks to show full effect, so patience and honest reporting at follow-ups make a big difference.
Can my child or teen see a psychiatrist here?
Yes. We have psychiatric providers with specific expertise in pediatric and adolescent care, including ADHD, ASD, learning disabilities, and complex developmental or behavioral conditions. The intake process is the same; we'll match you to the right provider for your child's age and situation.
Will medication change who I am?
A common worry β and a fair one. The goal of psychiatric medication is to relieve symptoms that are getting in the way (overwhelming anxiety, persistent depression, racing thoughts), not to flatten your personality. If a medication is making you feel less like yourself, tell your psychiatrist β that's important feedback and usually means an adjustment is needed.
